SHREWSBURY -- A Roxbury man was arrested yesterday morning after a five-minute armed standoff that closed down Route 9 for about 20 minutes.

Heriberto Torres, 31, of 35 Edgewood St., Apt. 1, Roxbury, was charged with possession of a loaded handgun while intoxicated, disturbing the peace and being a disorderly person, Shrewsbury police said. The standoff began about 1:45 a.m. when Shrewsbury Police Officer Paul Brown saw a vehicle stopped in the travel lane of Route 9 eastbound at Industrial Drive, Shrewsbury police said.

After holding police at bay for about five minutes, the man, who police identified as Mr. Torres, surrendered and was taken into custody without incident, police said.

Police confiscated a loaded .357 magnum revolver at the scene. Police seized Mr. Torres' Massachusetts firearm license, which police will refer back to the issuing agency for review and revocation. After being evaluated at UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus in Worcester, Mr. Torres was held on $500 cash bail.

The incident is being investigated, police said.
